Aug. 2nd, 2009 08:41 amI think my ears have recovered from last night, they still seem a bit dead. We saw Elton John and Billy Joel on their Face 2 Face 2009 tour, over in Philadelphia at Citizen's Bank Park (where the Phillies play). Our seats were off to the left, about 29 rows back, so everything was at a weird angle but they had a screen so we could see the stage. But it was still pretty cool because we were sitting on the field, so we got to see into the dugouts as we walked to our seats, and it was a view of the stadium one doesn't often get. Players' eye view, even.
It was a great show, even with annoying noisy girl behind us, who thankfully shut up after the fifth song or so. The two opened with four songs together, then Elton had his time on stage. I've seen him a couple of times, the hubby is a huge fan, and I notice that he always seems to start with Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding which is pretty cool live, and he always has a long jam in Rocket Man which is good...I mean it's no Drums/Space, but it's good. Then Billy Joel came out for his portion. He was recovering from the flu, and a few times during the performance you could see him struggling, and by the end of the encore, he looked like he wanted to collapse, but he still carried on. This is only the second time I've seen him live, but it was fun to contrast the two singers' stage presences. Elton is more subdued. He gets into the songs, but doesn't really talk much. Billy is more interactive, talking to the crowd, introducing the members of his band, teasing, cracking jokes, (even about his recent divorce) etc.
They did a four song encore, closing the show with Candle in the Wind and then Piano Man. All in all, a good time.
Edit: oh, also forgot to mention, Reese Witherspoon was in the audience last night.
and, of course, dragons:
