Productive weekend
Nov. 4th, 2013 08:24 amSo my second attempt to make applesauce turned out much better. A little thicker than I wanted but I need to work on the water to apples ratio. Also made muffins with some of the applesauce, and tried out a recipe for pickled garlic. That has to sit until Wednesday or so, before we can test it.
Later in the week I'm going to start on the homemade vanilla extract experiment, I just need to buy some vodka for that. Whee.

(no subject)
Oct. 26th, 2013 03:47 pmSo today was my first attempt at making homemade applesauce. It turned out well, I used a mix of Golden Delicious, Gala, Crispin and Granny Smith. (I think the Crispin was in a bit worse shape than I'd thought, but all in all, a decent batch) I think next time I'll stick with a Golden Delicious and Gala mix, maybe throw in a Honeycrisp or two. It was a small batch, I only used 4 apples total, one of each type listed. Once I get better at it, I'll try larger batches. Maybe draft the slow cooker into the process, that way I can just let it slowly stew for a few hours without having to watch the stove.
I also plan on attempting to make my own vanilla extract. I don't really bake as much as I used to but I'm curious to try making my own anyway. If it turns out well I'll inflict it...er...gift it out to family, perhaps. (though the glass jars I want to use...oof...the shipping is as much as the order I'm placing but eh, glass is heavy, and I'd rather use glass than plastic)
Edit to add: Upon further tasting, I may have to consider this batch of applesauce a dud, there's just an off kind of flavour that is not appealing. Ah well, live and learn, and try again!

In a pickle
May. 7th, 2010 02:37 pmWell, sort of. I'm attempting to make my own pickles for the first time ever, using this recipe (will open to a video) from Alton Brown. We'll see how they taste in a day or two.
