Well, I completed one of my intended goals for today: going to the store to buy a few planners, one for work and one to track Prince's food, medicine and, kinda grossly, but his puke episodes as well. Never did get to A.C. Moore to pick up frames for the assorted arts in need of such. Ah well. Might aim to get that done Saturday if I feel like bothering, otherwise next Friday.

Had a nice meal at Cap'N Cat's, a seafood place in Franklinville, NJ, with hubby, and [livejournal.com profile] lowen_kind. Soo much crab and shrimps and mussels and clams (which I didn't eat).

After taste-testing the result of the pickled garlic experiment, we were pleased. Recipe needs a little tweaking but overall, a good result. Homemade granola first attempt earlier this morning came out well, it makes a lot, but I like the stuff. Yay.

So today was my first attempt at making homemade applesauce. It turned out well, I used a mix of Golden Delicious, Gala, Crispin and Granny Smith. (I think the Crispin was in a bit worse shape than I'd thought, but all in all, a decent batch) I think next time I'll stick with a Golden Delicious and Gala mix, maybe throw in a Honeycrisp or two. It was a small batch, I only used 4 apples total, one of each type listed. Once I get better at it, I'll try larger batches. Maybe draft the slow cooker into the process, that way I can just let it slowly stew for a few hours without having to watch the stove.

I also plan on attempting to make my own vanilla extract. I don't really bake as much as I used to but I'm curious to try making my own anyway. If it turns out well I'll inflict it...er...gift it out to family, perhaps. (though the glass jars I want to use...oof...the shipping is as much as the order I'm placing but eh, glass is heavy, and I'd rather use glass than plastic)

Edit to add: Upon further tasting, I may have to consider this batch of applesauce a dud, there's just an off kind of flavour that is not appealing. Ah well, live and learn, and try again!

Cat antics

Silly cat nearly gave me a heart attack today. I couldn't find him at all after I came back from grocery shopping. Rattled his treats, no response, called his name, no response. Tore through the house for about 20 minutes, looking in things, behind things, under things. All the things (or so I thought). Thought maybe he got outside somehow, or was wedged under something sick or worse (Mojo's sudden death in December still hurts, and is often on my mind). Finally I found the little booger in his 'cave': the spot at the foot of the bed where the comforter drapes down and touches the floor. Gah. So I petted him, gave him a treat and went back out for errands part 2, which included more of the only chicken-free, grain-free formula that he will eat and doesn't set off his allergies. His fur does seem to be growing back finally, too, with the new food.

Best Buy was the next stop, to use my coupon, and they've certainly amped up the sales associate presence on the floor. I must have been greeted/stalked by 6 different people in my wanderings. Their anime section sucks now but I found a mini tripod and a flash drive so yey.

Now, spicy shrimp inari sushi for lunch. It's supermarket sushi but it's actually not bad.

So, we're at one of our favourite teppanyaki places for dinner, and 5 of the 10 people smooshed around the table (me and hubby included) order a filet and...whatever combo. Two diners, not us, get the meat well done. We and the other person go for medium rare (which usually ends up closer to medium anyway).

I mean, fine, do what you want with your meat (innuendo intentional) but seriously, if you're gonna burn the damn thing, get some other cut of cow. It's an injustice, in my opinion, to cook such a tender bit of meat so overly much. Bleh.

Yeah yeah I know, #firstworldproblems. Still, was a tasty dinner as always.

It was funny too, the chef seared both sides of one of the filets and jokingly acted like he was going to hand it to me. Hubby pipes up that "she'd probably eat it" and...yeah...I probably would. Rare, medium rare, it's all good.

So, I've been trying to eat healthier, cutting back on sugar and refined carbohydrates, but sometimes, you just want a goddam pizza and a beer. And I has one, bbq chicken and pineapple, paired with a Yuengling Black and Tan. *nom*

I'll be healthy tomorrow.

So, yesterday I tried a Hershey's Air Delight, which was very much like an Aero Bar. It wasn't bad.

Of course, now I'll have to hunt down an Aero bar again so I can compare, since I haven't had one in quite some time. I know of an import store that carries English and Irish goods, but that's in Ocean City and no way in hell am I going anywhere near that town until the Shoebees go away.

WTF?

I'll eat my burger or steak as rare as I damn well please, thank you very much.

In a pickle

Well, sort of. I'm attempting to make my own pickles for the first time ever, using this recipe (will open to a video) from Alton Brown. We'll see how they taste in a day or two.

I has a Shamrock Shake! Hubby brought it home for me.

Yey for strange minty green flavouring. *slurp*

Greek yogurt + honey = Yum.

I really must find my slow cooker. I'm usually rather tired after work and don't have an interest in cooking, but coming home to a meal already warm and waiting...whee.
