In other news, Borders is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The store near me, thankfully, is not on the list of scheduled closures. I know with the increasing convenience of e-readers, online ordering, etc, brick and mortar storefronts carrying dead tree books are edging towards eventual extinction; but I still enjoy browsing, picking up a book to flip through it, maybe reading a chapter to decide if I want to take it home. Heck, even with my fascination for all things shiny and electronic, I still pay my bills by check. (I just prefer having a paper trail for finances, which I can later recycle. ;))

(speaking of books, I'm currently enjoying the first of the Night Angel trilogy, The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks. Yay, assassins)

Ah well, more information about this can be found here, including the list of stores to be closed.

I don't think the book store is gone, but the mass market aka Walmart of bookstores is quite dead. The problem for them more than anything else is how much stock you have to have in the store, its just too much money there. A more narrowly focused store, or one selling used books can do a better job of cost control, and those won't be going any where.

It's s shame really all of these companies are on their way out (Blockbuster etc.)

However Borders and even Barnes and Noble...I can understand that - their prices at the stores are outrageous. Some DVDs there I have seen for sale are over $30 and meanwhile down at Target you can get said DVD for $15 or $20. I never buy books there either; they are way overpriced.

*nods* Oh, I'll agree, their prices for dvds etc are a bit on the spendy side, but they have a better selection of Manga than the smaller bookstores in the area, so I gravitate there for all my manga needs :).

True, and I do love browsing through used book stires, you find the neatest things there.
