So my second attempt to make applesauce turned out much better. A little thicker than I wanted but I need to work on the water to apples ratio. Also made muffins with some of the applesauce, and tried out a recipe for pickled garlic. That has to sit until Wednesday or so, before we can test it.

Later in the week I'm going to start on the homemade vanilla extract experiment, I just need to buy some vodka for that. Whee.

Well, being off on a Wednesday certainly feels odd. Not that I'm complaining, a fellow desk-monkey needed Friday off to go to her brother's college graduation so we swapped. And I get to see Blues Traveler on Friday night as well; they're playing at Harrah's. I only know a few songs, but hey, free tickets are free tickets :).

We also saw the new Star Trek movie this past Friday and I quite liked it. I know there's folks out there who do not like this interpretation of the Star Trek universe and that's fine, they are entitled to dislike it for whatever reasons they have. I tend to view this new version as completely separate from the old one. I liked the original series rather a lot but I also like this newer one as well. Also Benedict Cumberbatch. Yay.

Saturday was spent in Cape May with [livejournal.com profile] lowen_kind, as the only two attendees of this year's CMFM. Hopefully, we can figure out a way to bolster attendance for next year.

A couple of Sundays ago my sister and I went to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (which is only maybe 30 minutes from my house, I must go back sometime soon) for her birthday and had some fun bird spotting. It seems there was an unusual visitor to the facility that day, a Bar-Tailed Godwit, not normally found in this area. Birders are very, very insane people. Passionate, but insane (and I mean this in a good way). Everyone we talked to on our visit was hunting for this bird, they had driven miles and miles to see it. We kind of wanted to see it as well, just to see what the fuss was about, but alas, said birdy was feeling reclusive. I kind of envied them, their passion and so forth. I consider myself a fan of of quite a few things, but not with any great "omg, I -have- to go here, or to that con or buy -that- thing", I don't research artists or actors or collect memorabilia or memorize episodes of shows or read the books in a series over and over and over again(well, except for a few series). Just once, I'd kind of like to feel that level of dedication, that level of inclusion and passion about, well, anything.

Busy weekend so far. Yesterday we had a small garage sale, looking to offload some old tools and car parts that...well...actually let me start at the beginning.

For a while now, we'd been renting garage space for the Model A, a 1923 Buick (which has been sold) and a bunch of old tools, parts and whatnot that hubby and his brother received from their grandfather. But now that we don't need garage space for two vehicles, the Model A will be moved to our garage, along with what tools we decided to keep. One of the items we, as of yet, have been unable to sell is a MIG welder, which neither of us has any idea how to use. (Anyone want *to buy a welder?)

Going through the old tools was neat, especially when finding things that I had no clue what they were. Even the old boxes were neat, small metal tins for glass fuses, old advertisements, odd metal bits etc.

Next week, they'll move the last few items from the garage, including a spare engine, the welder and a few random other things. Then, at least, there'll be $120 less of an expense per month that we'll have to worry about. Which is good. 'Specially these days.

(Edit to add *to buy. Sorry I should have mentioned that the hubby still wants to sell it.)

Our propane grill bit the big one, so we won't be able to use that to cook when the power goes out. Blah. Memo to self: invest in small charcoal-based grill for the future. Just a few more things need to be done before the weather turns nasty: I have to take in the bird feeders, finish laundry, get candles situated in strategic locations, etc. Hubby's parents will be here in a few hours, as they live in one of the mandatory evacuation zones. My car's been stashed in the garage as it is wee and would sustain more damage than the Charger, which is a freakin' tank. And in the event of us needing to flee, which is unlikely but one never knows, that's the better car to have on the road. It's powerful, heavy and can hold a lot more than my Fiesta.

Edit 9:15am:and the rain has begun a few minutes ago.

Coupons

Anyone out there, with access to a Shop Rite, take Prilosec OTC? I ask because I received two coupons that I won't use but since one is for $2 off and the other is for a free 14 count package, I thought they might be of some use to someone, since that stuff can be pricey.

Let me know and I'll pop them in the mail. The free one expires on August 31, 2011.

This is likely old news to any of you out there who play/played City of Heroes, but for anyone who had to stop due to cost, there will soon be a free to play option coming up in the not too distant future.

So, yesterday I tried a Hershey's Air Delight, which was very much like an Aero Bar. It wasn't bad.

Of course, now I'll have to hunt down an Aero bar again so I can compare, since I haven't had one in quite some time. I know of an import store that carries English and Irish goods, but that's in Ocean City and no way in hell am I going anywhere near that town until the Shoebees go away.

Yesterday I discovered two awesome things:

1. pretzel bagels
2. Tom Petty's cover of Friend of the Devil

Youtube is being stupid about embedding this, so just click here.

Call me old fashioned, but even in this shiny, computer-tech age, I still like to pay my bills by check. Regular, old, paper checks. Even with more and more companies touting how less wasteful paying on-line is and hey, I'm all for reducing waste. Especially junk mail, grr. But still, I also feel a need to, in a way, support the postal service. I buy local when I can, recycle as much as possible but if I do buy something online that I can't just drive to a store to pick up, it'll have to be shipped, and odds are, it'll be through the postal service.

Yeah, stamp prices will probably go up again in the not too distant future, and I'll grumble about them but I'll buy them. As much as I hate junk mail and waste, I love getting and sending letters, packages and neat things more.

So, I just finished reading V for Vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. I must say I rather liked it, but then I have a soft spot for dystopian type settings. Certainly had some concepts in it worth pondering. Eventually, I might watch the movie, just to compare it to the comic. *eyes the pile of movies that need watching and books that need reading* Oh, for extra hours in the day. They would be well used.

In other news, Borders is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The store near me, thankfully, is not on the list of scheduled closures. I know with the increasing convenience of e-readers, online ordering, etc, brick and mortar storefronts carrying dead tree books are edging towards eventual extinction; but I still enjoy browsing, picking up a book to flip through it, maybe reading a chapter to decide if I want to take it home. Heck, even with my fascination for all things shiny and electronic, I still pay my bills by check. (I just prefer having a paper trail for finances, which I can later recycle. ;))

(speaking of books, I'm currently enjoying the first of the Night Angel trilogy, The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks. Yay, assassins)

Ah well, more information about this can be found here, including the list of stores to be closed.

A pretty nifty piece of music:

I've not seen the film it's from, entitled Sunshine, but I might check it out. This piece was also used in an episode of The Walking Dead, which is why it sounded so familiar when I found it on YouTube.

So, according to the car in front of me as I returned from the bank and post office, Judgment Day will be on May 21, 2011.

Oooooohkay...

bah does it have to be a Saturday? It'll ruin my whole weekend. :)

also, Despicable Me was really cute.

So, yesterday I finally got around to watching Alpha and Omega, as it is now available on Comcast On Demand. It was...ok. Predictable story, mediocre animation, some funny bits here and there and the obvious scenes meant for the 3-d version were just that, obvious. I am not a fan of the whole 3-D trend, but hey if others like it, more power to them.

It was basically a "turn off your brain and watch a movie" movie. I might watch it again, but I'll definitely wait until it's free. Next, I think I'll watch Despicable Me. That, at least, looks worth the five dollar On Demand fee.
