Hm, Half Life 2 and Borderlands are both on sale on Steam for under $5 each. Almost too good to pass up, even if I suck at first-person shooter formats.

OK, so it's winter, December 22nd, and 69 degrees.

Stupid weather.

Oh well *opens up windows to get fresh air in the house*

So I went to see The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug today and I quite liked it.
As always, things were tinkered with/added/subtracted etc from the original story but it didn't detract from the experience as a whole.

Now I need a toy Smaug to sit and gloat on my desk. Yes. *skims the toys r us website*

Also saw a preview for a new Godzilla movie. Hopefully it's better than the 1998 version. (Which, honestly, wasn't horrid, I just don't think it should have been a "Godzilla" movie. Random mutated giant monster attacking a city? Fine, I loves me some monster movies. But it's not Godzilla.)

Hello random power outage.

It also was going on and off all night and apparently fried the cable box in the bedroom.

After taste-testing the result of the pickled garlic experiment, we were pleased. Recipe needs a little tweaking but overall, a good result. Homemade granola first attempt earlier this morning came out well, it makes a lot, but I like the stuff. Yay.

*ponders what to cook now*

So my second attempt to make applesauce turned out much better. A little thicker than I wanted but I need to work on the water to apples ratio. Also made muffins with some of the applesauce, and tried out a recipe for pickled garlic. That has to sit until Wednesday or so, before we can test it.

Later in the week I'm going to start on the homemade vanilla extract experiment, I just need to buy some vodka for that. Whee.

So today was my first attempt at making homemade applesauce. It turned out well, I used a mix of Golden Delicious, Gala, Crispin and Granny Smith. (I think the Crispin was in a bit worse shape than I'd thought, but all in all, a decent batch) I think next time I'll stick with a Golden Delicious and Gala mix, maybe throw in a Honeycrisp or two. It was a small batch, I only used 4 apples total, one of each type listed. Once I get better at it, I'll try larger batches. Maybe draft the slow cooker into the process, that way I can just let it slowly stew for a few hours without having to watch the stove.

I also plan on attempting to make my own vanilla extract. I don't really bake as much as I used to but I'm curious to try making my own anyway. If it turns out well I'll inflict it out to family, perhaps. (though the glass jars I want to use...oof...the shipping is as much as the order I'm placing but eh, glass is heavy, and I'd rather use glass than plastic)

Edit to add: Upon further tasting, I may have to consider this batch of applesauce a dud, there's just an off kind of flavour that is not appealing. Ah well, live and learn, and try again!

I think people who want to 'sanitize' Hallowe'en and make it less scary should watch this video. It's an interesting argument for letting kids be scared on occasion. (LJ wouldn't embed it so just click on the link, also some coarse language in the video so might not be entirely work-safe)

So far, Portal 2 is fun. Some neat new challenges and I really like the setting, etc. Am about 12 or so levels in, so have a little bit to go, yet. Trying not to rush but I keep wanting to solve each room as quickly as possible so that I can see the next room, and so on.

Well, I took Sir Pukes-a-lot, aka Prince, to the vet today because he's been throwing up for the past few days. No other signs of distress, eating/drinking fine, running around like his usual boogery self, just a daily vomit episode (Monday's, I suspect, was due to the piece of plastic I found in the mess Yay, some happy birthday present to me, cat vomit). He'd actually gained a half ounce since his last weight check last month, though I suspect he'd have gained a few more without the puking. So he got another steroid shot, and we'll see how he does in a few days. We may eventually have to start giving him an oral steroid on a daily-ish regimen.

This song was stuck in my head all day, so I'm sharing it with you all so that it may roost somewhere else. Yay.

Ugh, so I've been playing Injustice: Gods Among Us on my phone, yay smash-em-up fighting game and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use this upgrade card I got in a booster pack. Ah well, *mashes more foes with Solomon Grundy*
